joy and sorrow are absolutely connected and must always be
sorrow is constriction, a folding into self
joy is expansion, an open embrace
I must unfold those places within myself that were so immediately creased as a protection from early pain.
those lines of my protected self are so deep that they seem to define my very existence.
but this definition was chosen for me, not by me
I would have chosen differently.
instead of lines and edges, I would have chosen spirals
spirals are movement and inclusion, they unite rather than separate
a spiral can hold both joy and sorrow…both welcome and loss…both pain and healing
I’m glad you’re here💜

Oh, these lines Dinah: ‘sorrow is constriction, a folding into self. joy is expansion, an open embrace.’ The contrast between these two states evokes movement, a swirl, a spiral, a flowing from one to another, an encapsulation of both. I’m saving these lines to my list of favourite quotes!
