My dear friend Jo said to me years ago, “Dinah, immediate gratification is too slow for you!” And, of course he was spot on! I’m so bad at waiting.
I feel like I’m walking a razor’s edge trying to be patient AND proactive. It seems to me that there is a continuum. Starting from the far left we’d see Lazy, then Mildly Engaged, then PATIENTLY WAITING, then Proactively Engaged, then Pushy, and on the far right Obnoxious! I’ve never been good at perceiving the delineations on this continuum. I float up and down these stages constantly wondering if what I’m doing is enough or too much.
So much of life seems to be in this gray area. William Blake said: “You never know what is enough unless you know what is more than enough.”
And I would argue that, even then, there’s no way to know. Of course the reason this is unknowable is because EVERYTHING we do ripples out and effects others. And we can’t know how others will perceive and process our actions.
So what’s the answer? What’s the pathway to patience and peace when anxiously awaiting resolution, or at the very least, movement? Seriously, I wish I knew. I’d bottle it and market it and make a fortune and move to someplace warm!
I can only tell you what I TRY to do in this situation. I try to remind myself to TRUST! I remind myself that the Universe has my back. Rumi said: “LIVE LIFE AS IF EVERYTHING IS RIGGED IN YOUR FAVOR.” –
This golden nugget from Rumi becomes my mantra. I force myself to trust…or to pretend to trust even when I feel anxious! Everything will work out one way or another and I’ll always be ok! I may have to say this to myself 20 times per day. But, when I do, it centers me and lets me feel grounded… Until the next wave hits. And then I do it all over again.
When I sat down to write this post I had no idea what I was going to talk about. This just flowed out on its own. That leads me to believe that, perhaps, someone else needs to hear this. Someone else is feeling anxious and wondering about what to do next. I urge you to try this…Remind yourself that all is well and the Universe has your back. See if it works for you. I hope it helps in some small way!
Remember… None of us are alone in this journey. We all have each other. And our stories are more similar than they are different.
I’m glad you’re here!

A lovely post. I really like Rumi, think I need to pull his words out of the bookcase again soon. Especially loved these words of yours: ‘And our stories are more similar than they are different.’ So very true. ❤️
