The man leaving the gas station holds the door for the next person going in.
I see small acts of kindness
And the habit of manners
It makes me smile
The mom in the yard, watching the little one on the bike
I see love and fatigue in almost equal measure
And the habit of trying, always trying
It makes me wonder how she/they do it
The news shows us pain, so much pain. And those in charge yell constantly about “us” and “them” as though there’s a difference
I see duplicity
And the habit of blame
It makes me look for responsibility
I see artificial delineations
between people
I see unnecessary boundaries
between countries
I see grief
And the habit of fear
It makes me hope for better
And I see potential
I see the writers and poets and advocates talking about truth
I see the focus on unifying thought and language and action
I see the possibility of global mindfulness
I see choice
And the habit of consciousness
It makes me more aware
I see the need to remember
to always remember
to see and to choose
love
