The Cold Caught Me

* Photo of a blue footed booby from Facebook because I absolutely love this picture!

Like almost every day

I begin with a shower

I blow dry my bangs

And slide into jeans and tennis shoes… Shoes are important when balance is bad

I’m determined

A normal routine will mean a normal day

I’m sure of it

But after the shower and the dressing and the shoes

I’m exhausted

And freezing

And the fire in my throat is demanding attention, but I ignore it

Until I can’t

So I go back to bed and stay on top of the blankets

And grab an extra fuzzy, striped, throw and burrito myself on top of the bed

Still determined… But this time for sleep

Sleep is the answer to every question about what to do when normal is gone…

It seems though that sleep is as elusive as normal

We play hide and seek for a bit

I get very close to drifting off, but then I lose my grip and I’m wide awake once again

Too fried to be functional and too functional to sleep

So what to do when normal has left the building and sleep is cat and mousing through the house?

Perhaps a poem is born…

****I’m finally admitting to catching a cold… Please forgive this feeble attempt at a poem

I’m glad you’re here💜

  1. I recognised, in your poem, a swing between giving in to the arrival of illness and the internal railing against it.

These lines were some of my favourites:

    ‘I’m determined

A normal routine will mean a normal day’

Sleep is the answer to every question about what to do when normal is gone…

    1. You are absolutely right! In hindsight, I spent the entire month of April railing against… First, the cold and then Covid. I’m so glad that all of that is in the rearview mirror now. Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend!
